Routine Cleanings

Cleanings are vital to maintain oral health and to prevent periodontal disease, tooth decay, and tooth loss. There are different types of dental cleanings.

A dental prophy (prophylaxis) is when the hygienist cleans the teeth and gums by removing plaque, tartar, and staining. The teeth will also be polished during this treatment.

Scaling and root planing is a deep cleaning below the gumline used to treat periodontal disease. It is a non-surgical procedure used to bring the gums back to health and to prevent further bone loss. Usually more than one appointment is needed.

Oral Cancer Screenings

Oral cancer screening is a preventive healthcare procedure aimed at detecting early signs of oral cancer. Oral cancer refers to any cancerous growth that occurs in the oral cavity, which includes the lips, tongue, gums, cheeks, the floor and roof of the mouth as well as the tonsils and back of the throat.

Early detection of oral cancer is crucial for successful treatment and better patient outcome. During an oral cancer screening, a dentist, oral surgeon, or other healthcare professionals examine the mouth for any abnormal tissue or lesions that may indicate the presence of cancer or precancerous conditions.

Sealants

Dental sealants are commonly recommended for children and teenagers as soon as their permanent molars and premolars erupt, usually around the ages of 6 and 12. These are the years when the risk of cavities is higher due to the development of deep grooves and the difficulty of properly cleaning these areas. However, adults who are prone to cavities on their back teeth may also benefit from getting dental sealants.

Dental x-rays

The frequency of dental x-rays varies based on an individual’s oral health needs and risk factors. Dentists will consider factors such as age, dental history, and the presence of any oral health issues when determining the appropriate timing for x-rays.

Mouth Guards

A mouthguard for pediatric use is a dental appliance designed to protect a child’s teeth, gums, lips, and tongue from injury during sports or certain activities. Children and teenagers involved in contact sports such as football, hockey, basketball, soccer, and martial arts are especially prone to dental injuries, making the use of mouthguards essential.

Regular dental check-ups are important to monitor the child’s oral health and the fit of the mouthguard. As the child’s teeth and jaw grow, the mouthguard may need adjustments or replacement.
